We want to focus our attention on literacy-rich environments and how they support and encourage literacy learning. We want to think about the classroom environments in our own schools and consider how the spaces are organised? Do they support whole group and small group literacy experiences? We want to reflect on the print that is displayed. Is it functional, authentic and informative, and does it reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of the class? We need to look closely at classroom libraries. Are they well positioned for easy access, organised and do they ‘invite’ students in? We also want to examine the tools students need for learning and ask — are they organised and accessible so that students can transition easily and build their independence? Overall, we need to determine if the literacy environments in our school enhance the students’ engagement in literacy experiences.

In this session, we will explore the physical environment of a 1st grade classroom where 2 classes work with 2 teachers. The classroom is well set up for students to feel comfortable and to learn. We can look through the classroom, but to really delve into the teaching and learning here, we need to zoom in and reflect on what each of the elements mean. Take your time and enjoy!

ANCHOR CHARTS

Anchor charts are a place to anchor the thinking that comes from the explicit teaching in the classroom. Teachers re-visit these charts when needed with a whole group, small group and individuals.

CLASSROOM LIBRARY IMAGES

By looking closely at this classroom library we can learn a lot about the teaching that takes place, the way that students work and the way they might feel in this environment.

To learn more about classroom environments read the following chapters from:

  • Chapter 2:  a supportive and productive learning environment promotes inclusion and collaboration

  • Chapter 3:  student voice, agency and leadership empower students and build school pride

ACTION: LITERACY CLASSROOM WALKTHROUGH

In groups of 8 on Monday we will walk through each of the 8 classrooms where the 'host' will share their goal and the rest of the observers will focus thinking on how the classrooms support learners. Note down the positives or strengths, and any areas of need.

Consider the level of consistency across the school.
